Pontiac Trans Am
73rd Indy 500
May 28, 1989

1989 marked the 20th anniversary of the Pontiac Trans Am and the second time the venerable sports car had been selected to pace the Indy 500. 1500 specially equipped 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am coupes were built, and the three track cars were actually selected directly from this pool of production cars. The only modifications required were mandatory safety requirements.

The 1989 pace car was driven by three-time Indy 500 winner Bobby Unser.
