Chrysler LeBaron
71st Indy 500
May 24, 1987

1987 brought a transformation of the popular Chrysler LeBaron from the "K-car" body style to a modern, aerodynamic roadster, making it a perfect choice to pace the Indy 500.  The front-wheel drive LeBaron Pace Car was powered by a "Turbo II" Dodge Daytona Shelby Z engine that produced 174 horsepower.  The pace car replica used a 146-HP "Turbo I" version of this engine.

Besides the engine and other mechanical parts, the Shelby name could also be found behind the wheel of the '87 LeBaron Convertible.  Road racing veteran Carroll Shelby, designer of the legendary Shelby Cobra and consultant to Chrysler, made his first appearance at the Brickyard as driver of the pace car.
