Chevrolet Corvette
62nd Indy 500
May 28, 1978

25 years after the birth of "America's Sports Car", the Corvette finally got a chance to pace the Indy 500 in 1978.  The car, powered by a 220-horsepower, 5.7L V-8 engine, was the first Pace Car in history to use an entirely stock drivetrain.  The pace car was driven by 1960 Indy 500 winner Jim Rathmann, his fifth time at the wheel of the pace car.

Although only 2500 replicas were originally planned, Chevrolet eventually produced 6502 - one for each dealership.  Replicas were available with the standard 185-hp L-48 engine or the optional 220-hp L-82 engine.1
