2004 Chevy Impala SS to pace the Indy 500?
Updated February 10, 2004

Will the new 2004 Impala SS be this year's Indy pace car?  Apparently not, according to Impala/Monte Carlo marketing director John Hughes.  An article in the Chicago Tribune says that the Impala SS Indy edition is being released "to commemorate that Chevy cars have paced more Indianapolis 500 races than any other brand" but will not be this year's pace car.  According to the Tribune, 4,088 Indy SS sedans will be built to commemorate the 88th running of the Indy 500.

The following is information on the Impala SS Indy package from Edmunds.com

Z4Z Indy Impala SS Limited Edition

So what will this year's pace car be?  For now we will have to keep waiting, although as the only American company producing engines for the Indy 500, it's almost certain that GM will once again supply the pace car and support vehicles.  Keep watching Indypacecars.com for details as them become available!
